Where it’s used

  • Document history

Let readers move through saved revisions without opening separate snapshots.

  • AI writing tools

Show how a draft developed and exactly which words each pass changed.

  • Proposal and contract review

Make additions, removals and reordered clauses visible as you move between versions.

  • Design and product briefs

Turn review rounds into a readable history of the decisions that shaped the final brief.

What it handles for you

A revision list can take you to an old snapshot, but it cannot show the document becoming that snapshot. This keeps one document alive across every revision and makes the change itself readable.

Instead of wiring upa revision dropdownside-by-side snapshotsword diffingdocument FLIP animationschange countsa history slider
  1. A ruler of real revisions

Dates determine the spacing, labels ride the playhead and the first and last dates anchor the range.

  2. Sections keep their identity

Give a surviving section the same id in each revision and it glides when its position or surrounding content changes.

  3. Words move instead of swapping

A word-level diff keeps shared words alive, dissolves removals and staggers new words into place.

  4. Every jump is counted

Added and removed word counts compare the revision you left with the one now on screen, even when you jump across the history.

  5. Controlled or self-contained

Select revisions by id yourself, or let the component own the selection and report each change.

  6. The document stays usable

Text remains selectable, the ruler is a real slider and reduced motion keeps every revision available without travel or blur.

Overview

Document history is usually a list of snapshots: open two, then scan both to work out what changed. Version time machine keeps one document on screen and puts its revisions on a date-spaced ruler. Drag the playhead and sections that survive keep their identity as they reorder and reflow. Shared words glide to their new positions, removed words dissolve where they stood and new words arrive with a brief green tint. The document height eases to fit, the revision counter rolls and the added and removed counts describe the jump you just made. It works with ordinary revision records, controlled or uncontrolled, and needs no editor runtime.

States

scrub
The playhead, fill and nearby ruler ticks follow the pointer through transforms. Crossing a stop selects that revision; release settles onto its date over 460ms with a slight overshoot.
reflow
Sections and words shared with the previous view FLIP to their new layout over 480ms. The document height eases over the same duration.
added
New words rise 0.35em through a 4px blur, 14ms apart, and hold an emerald tint for part of a 1.7s highlight. New sections rise 10px through a 5px blur.
removed
Removed words stay at their old coordinates as struck-through red ghosts, then dissolve over 250ms. Removed sections dissolve over 280ms before the ghost is unmounted.
step
Older and newer buttons move one revision. Arrow keys do the same on the ruler; Home and End jump to the first and latest revision.
reduced motion
The playhead and document change in place without travel, blur, stagger or height animation. Revision and change information remains available.

Usage

usage.tsx
import { VersionTimeMachine } from "@/components/version-time-machine";<VersionTimeMachine revisions={[ { id: "draft", label: "Draft", date: "2026-10-02", blocks: [{ id: "intro", type: "paragraph", text: "The first draft." }], }, { id: "final", label: "Final", date: "2026-10-12", blocks: [{ id: "intro", type: "paragraph", text: "The approved final draft." }], }, ]}/>

Works with

With revisions loaded from your application

Keep your storage and permissions on the server. Pass plain, serialisable revision records to the client component; stable section ids are what preserve the motion.

example.tsx
import { VersionTimeMachine, type DocumentRevision } from "@/components/version-time-machine";export default async function DocumentHistoryPage() {  const response = await fetch("https://example.com/api/documents/launch/revisions", { cache: "no-store" });  if (!response.ok) throw new Error("Could not load revisions");  const revisions: DocumentRevision[] = await response.json();  return (    <main className="mx-auto max-w-2xl p-6">      <VersionTimeMachine revisions={revisions} />    </main>  );}

Props

PropTypeDescription
revisionsDocumentRevision[]Oldest first. Each revision has an id, label, date and blocks; author and summary are optional.
revisions[].blocks{ id, type, text }[]Headings, paragraphs, list items and quotes. Reuse a block id whenever that section survives.
value / defaultValue / onValueChangestringdefault latest idThe selected revision id, controlled or uncontrolled.
highlightbooleandefault trueBriefly tint inserted words after a revision change.
labelstringdefault "Document revision"The revision slider’s accessible name.
localesstring | string[]default "en-GB"Locale used for revision dates. Calendar dates are formatted in UTC for stable server and client output.

Accessibility and motion

  • The ruler is a slider: arrow keys move one revision and Home and End jump to the ends. Older and newer buttons provide a second keyboard-accessible path.
  • Diff counts compare the view you left with the newly selected view. The initial selection compares with the preceding revision in the supplied array.
  • Word matching is exact, including punctuation and capitalisation. Stable block ids are required for section movement; changing an id makes a removal and an addition.
  • The word diff uses longest common subsequence matching and falls back to a full replacement above 250,000 token comparisons to bound memory use.
  • Leaving words and sections are hidden from assistive technology. A polite status announces the selected revision and its change counts.
  • Dates are formatted in UTC. Use full ISO timestamps if their time-of-day matters; the ruler still positions them chronologically.
  • Installs Number roll and Text morph. With reduced motion, all content and controls remain available but movement and blur are removed.

Requirements

React 19, Tailwind CSS v4 and shadcn/ui theme variables (any style, light and dark). Icons from lucide-react.

The CLI also installs Number roll, Text morph.
